Roots of Empathy- Update From Our Babies and Families

Hello P2,

Below you’ll find some messages from our Roots of Empathy families and Babies.

Message from Harry and his mum Kirsty:

Harry is doing really well. He’s now crawling, which is great. And he’s very fast. He whizzes across the floor. Today he was walking with his walker on his own. He also has his first tooth coming through, which is a little sore for him and wakes him up at night. He’s getting a big boy now though as you can see on the photos. He really misses the children at Dalry and hopes to see them again soon. He says a big ‘hello’. He’s also looking forward to his first birthday this month.

Message from Jamie and his mum Maxine:

Jamie and I are missing seeing you and the children, and we hope home learning is going well for everyone.   Jamie has come on leaps and bounds in the last month, it’s quiet unbelievable! He has started crawling, pulling himself up onto furniture, he loves clapping and he can feed himself finger foods without throwing them on the floor! He now likes strawberries, raspberries, olives and broccoli. He does not like tuna or cucumber! When I sing him the welcome song to Jamie, he ALWAYS responds with a big smile.

Dalry Grand Prix

We suspect a lot of you are playing video games in lockdown.

Just for fun over the long weekend Mr Bennett has set up a daily tournament for those in the school who have a Nintendo Switch online and Mariokart (quite a few people we know from playground chat) (sorry folks who use other platforms and games, this is the one we have access to).

It will run daily for an hour at 16.00-17.00 from today until Sunday.

The tournament code is 4408 8061 7003

With regard to online safety Mariokart doesn’t feature voice chat or free texting. You won’t need to friend the other players to play with this set up.

And if you’ve been building amazing things in other games like Minecraft feel free to send us some pictures of what you have created.

Have fun!

Mr Bennett’s Guide to Twitter

We have been having some worries communicated to us by families struggling to use Twitter to communicate with the teachers.

First and foremost we should underline that the Twitter accounts the Teachers are using during COVID 19 lockdown exist primarily so that the teachers can put their own messages and videos out to their classes and so there is an easy way for the children to see their faces or hear what is going on. Their main aim is to be a source of reassurance for your child.

We in no way are suggesting parents have to join Twitter to communicate and the primary conduit for all important conversations and queries should still be the school admin email inbox admin@dalry.edin.sch.uk

If you are keen to share what you are up to at home or ask a less important question, or pass on a child’s message then joining Twitter can be fun if you wish to. We do also note that Twitter is for people 13 and over so accounts should be fully supervised by you rather than a child.

With that in mind here are some videos from Mr Bennett to guide you through Twitter basics if you do wish to join in.

Polish Spotlight Competition

We’ve received the following information on a competition for Polish speaking families from the Stephen Spender trust.

Hi all,

We have just launched this year’s Polish Spotlight prize, which is an ideal activity for Polish-speakers to work on at home (with their parents, if they wish). Entrants translate a Polish poem into English, and write a short commentary about their translation.

We have curated a short list of fantastic poems for them to choose from, including lots by living poets. It’s a great way for Polish-speakers to engage with their heritage culture while practising the core literacy skills associated with translation.

The Spotlight is part of the national Stephen Spender Prize, which is for translation of any poem out of any language. In recent years we’ve received increasing numbers of entries from EAL pupils, and lots of positive feedback from them, EAL coordinators, parents and teachers. Please do spread the word amongst your pupils. The deadline is 17 July and we’ve made lots of virtual resources available here: http://www.multilingualcreativity.org.uk/resources/

Holidays and In Service Days in Coming Weeks

It’s Friday, It’s May and we hope you’ve all had another great Dalry Digital week.

We’d just like to remind you that there is an in service day and a school holiday to mark the 75th anniversary of VE day next week.

As a result P6 and P7 teams won’t run on Monday or Friday and Teachers won’t be on Twitter on those days.

We will be doing quite a lot of training and planning on Monday to try to keep adding to our digital school.

There is another holiday on Monday May 18th.

Have a great weekend and see you for another (shorter) Dalry Digital week on Tuesday.
