Mr Bennett’s Tech Tuesday
From this week we will be doing a Mr Bennett Tech Tuesday for those still home schooling.

If you want to learn how to make your own apps and games this is the place to learn the skills!
All of these tasks are extra fun things to do, not must complete tasks, so only attempt it if you fancy it after your other work.
P1-P4
My Grown Up is a Robot
Ask a grown up or a big sibling to be your robot for an hour.
Robots can only do what they are told.
Get them to also help you pick a task to achieve. Maybe walking from the front door to the kitchen.
Maybe getting a glass of water.
Or something more complicated like using the swings at the park.
They will only respond to the exact instructions on how to move though. Just like a real robot.
A really tough task is the one in this video about making a peanut butter and jelly (jam) sandwich. I don’t think you should try this with your grown up robot (unless you don’t mind wasting a lot of food) but watching it gives you an idea of how your robot grown up might act.
Was that tricky?
What mistakes did they make?
How will you need to make your instructions?
Then you need to give the robot grown up your instructions. If you are in P1 and P2 this could just be your saying the instructions.
If you are in P3 and P4 maybe you could go further and write them down.
All videos you want to share (no need to do this if you don’t want to) are welcome either in your class tech channel as an upload or on twitter to @tweetsbennett
P5-P7
Storytech
Did you know you can use scratch as a storytelling programme?
You can make your own animations or comic strips.
Try out the story tutorial here https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tutorial=tell-a-story
If you are feeling really fancy you could try the audio options too. Find the animations that can talk tutorial here https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tutorial=all along with all the other tutorials you could need.
You can use the included sprites and backgrounds or draw your own. It’s up to you.
If you want to share your story then either save the file and upload it to Mr Bennett’s tech channel in your class, or set up sharing in scratch (please ask a grown up for permission here) and share a link to the Mr B tech channel once you’ve shared your story.
Have fun coding Digital Dalry!
Things to do in the Lockdown Holidays.
School Breaks up at lunchtime tomorrow and we have a whole week of lockdown holiday to fill with fun. Here’s some ideas……
Snow Days
It is maybe going to snow again.
If it snows enough get out there and have some fun.
If you send your photos/videos of the below to his tech channels on teams or to @BennettTweets on Twitter when we get back Mr B will choose his top 3…
Snowpeople
Igloos
Snow Photos (taken by the kids not the grown ups).

Chinese New Year
It’s chinese new year next week.
There’s plenty of chinese new year activities you could try…
It’s the year of the Ox so you could try these Ox craft ideas https://www.activityvillage.co.uk/ox-crafts
Try chinese food like these kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orb0RDvYqWQ
Learn about how people celebrate in China https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjkc92p/articles/zphcydm

Dumplings https://www.misspandachinese.com/fun-in-the-kitchen-lets-make-chinese-dumplings/
Practice Your Pancakes
The first day back is Shrove Tuesday. This is the day before lent, a time of fasting in traditional Christian cultures, begins. Certain foods are not allowed during lent. One way to use them up was making pancakes.
So why not get practicing during February break.
Great Dalry Bake Off
Get your bake on and show us some showstoppers. If you want to post any pictures to the school twitter account feel free.
If you need ideas why not watch the Junior Bake Off 2021, which was on channel 4 last month. https://www.channel4.com/programmes/junior-bake-off/on-demand/70307-001
Spicing Up a Walk
We’ve all done most of the walks available to us, but there are ways to make them more interesting…
Pokemon GO: Pokemon go is an app game on phones. If your grown ups don’t mind and are happy to go with you why not try hunting for Pokemon around Edinburgh. (DOES COST TO DOWNLOAD)
Frisbee Golf: Take a frisbee, how many throws does it take to walk around your local park. Least throws is the winner.
Orienteering: We recently shared a post about orienteering courses in Edinburgh. Click here to see it.
Colour Walks: Go on a walk even around town but take photos of a nominated colour for the day. When you get back make a collage (on phone/computer/ or print and do in real life).
Go for a dark walk with torches (and grown ups).
Maybe try to see the space station (today or tomorrow only) https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/view.cfm?country=United_Kingdom®ion=Scotland&city=Edinburgh#.YBwDHqD7TIU)
See zoo animals on your walk by walking at Corstorphine Hill next to the zoo. You may even see a Mrs Honeyman in the wild there…
Where to Walk
There are great walks all over Edinburgh but you can get more ideas from this website https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lothian/edinburgh.shtml
Don’t forget the John Muir Way goes along the canal and past Saughton Park on it’s way across Scotland. Learn more about it at the John Muir Way Website and in the sways Mr Bennett Makes for P5.
Other Things to do Outside
Dust off the scooter, roller skates or bike.
Fly a kite.
Buy one or some these books and try to get them completed (especially this one).
Gardening
It’s a busy time of year in a real garden. You need to start preparing it for spring. If you have a vegetable garden that means lots of digging.
It can also mean lots of preparing of seeds to grow.
Why not try growing potatoes in a bucket or bag or try growing a herb box this spring.
You could make a digital garden in games like Minecraft or Animal Crossing if you play them. Grab some screenshots to show us if you like.
The most important thing though is…..
Have fun and take a break from school. It’s been a tough term. You deserve to choose your own stuff to fill your brain with.
Enjoy!

The teams/365 issue that began yesterday is continuing today.
Many people cannot login, if that includes you please do some Joe wicks, use the home learning page on the website to access your grid and the art, PE and Music activities. You could also choose to do your own family fun learning activity or even play a board game.
The council are working to fix this as quickly as possible.

Teams Changes. Lobby
In order to be an even more safe web environment CEC and Dalry Primary are changing some settings around meetings this week.
Some classes may already have been experiencing these changes.
All meetings (class chats, teacher calls, live stories etc) will now be entered via a lobby. Please wait until the teacher admits you.
This is for the purpose of removing opportunities for children to be in the online environement unsupervised.
Look out for the changes in your class.

Newsletter Regarding Extension of Current Closure
Please read the newsletter linked below regarding the extension of the closure announced by the First Minister yesterday.
Scots Week Assembly
Normally on this Monday of the year we would be starting Scots week, learning about Scottish culture and language and having a brilliant Scots assembly with The Sorries.
Well The Sorries surprised us today by sending a brilliant video assembly for us.
The link is below. It is one of the highlights of our school year but not normally one our parents and carers get to share so why not watch this over your lunch or after the working day with your whole family to share the fun.
Thank you to The Sorries!
