Winter Clothing

We’d like to take the opportunity to remind parents to send kids in weather appropriate clothing where possible during the snow.

We encourage the children to play outside when the snow is sitting or light and would recommend boots, gloves, hats and coats to help avoid wet feet and cold hands and where possible waterproof trousers.

Sounds of Common Words in English

As with all languages some of our most common words in English are those associated with its grammar.

Some of these words are also among the trickiest to read straight from the page. So it is worthwhile spending time practicing reading these words with your child.

To be able to progress to fluent and simple reading it is vital that a child knows these common words.

You can support that learning at home with the sounds below and the other resources in our phonics resource pages.

Christmas Clan Craft Event 2017

“The Dalry Christmas Clan Craft Event” took place this week with the children touring the school over the day, in clan groups of mixed ages, to produce some amazing christmas crafts.

At the end of the day we gathered in the hall and each clan showed their work to the others.

Lots of mess and fun was had.

Applying to Take Your Child Away in Term Time

Section 30 of the Education (Scotland) Act 1980 clearly states that parents do not have an automatic right to take their child out of school during term time.

Parents who chose to do so may be adversely affecting their child’s educational progress.

However, for some pupils these trips may be of great religious, cultural or family significance.

If you wish to apply to take your child on such a trip then please read through and complete the attached information and application form. On completion please return it to the school office and we will endeavour to give you our response promptly.

Sumdog: A Guide For Parents

Dalry Primary uses Sumdog, the online maths learning tool, in school.

Your child can also use their account at home.

Each child will receive a Sumdog sign in which will let them play the games at home and add coins and achievements to their school accounts. Look out for this sign in information in the coming weeks.

Your child’s account is free to use and will never request any micro-payments. It will also travel with them up through the school.

When your child starts into Sumdog there will be a short period of getting used to the site and then it will perform an extended diagnostic test to set the level for the questions they need to tackle. As a result of this test children can then play the same games against one another but be answering questions at their own level.

In order for the diagnostic test to work properly it is vital that parents don’t help their child to work out the answers. If they do the questions will likely be set as too hard, which while Sumdog will, over time, correct itself could lead to your child not enjoying, and therefore not using, this brilliant resource to the fullest extent they could.

Over the coming year class teachers will be able to set specific challenges linked to the curriculum and the school will be able to compete with others across Scotland, the UK and the World in Sumdog set contests.

Watch out for news of these on our website and we hope you and your child enjoy Sumdog.

Sounds of Vowel Digraphs In English

In written English some of our vowel sounds, the key building blocks of spoken language, are not represented by one letter but by several written together.

These are known as “Vowel Digraphs” and after learning the Sounds of the English Alphabet are the next step in a phonics based approach for reading.

We take this approach in school and you can support that learning at home with the sounds below and the other resources in our phonics resource pages.
