Gorgie City Farm Closure

As you may have heard a wonderful local institution, Gorgie City Farm, has collapsed into liquidation over the weekend.

Over the years it has been a vital part of the fabric of our local area and we would like, as a school, to express our sadness at the loss to Dalry, Gorgie and Edinburgh.

Dalry Primary School and Dalry Nursery were regular visitors at this great free attraction and will miss it keenly.

We would also like to express our thanks, gratitude and kindest wishes to the great staff who have kept this resource running so long and been of such support to not just our school but so many vulnerable people in our wider community.

Roots of Empathy- Latest News

Recently P2 were learning about how crying is a baby’s main means of communication, that babies are just letting us know they need help. Letting their parent/caregiver know they have a physical or psychological need.
The children were delighted to have their second visits from baby Harry and his mum Kirsty and baby Jamie and his mum Maxine, they helped the children understand that a baby’s temperament determines the frequency, intensity and duration of their crying. Kirsty and Maxine shared their experiences of being a parent and both babies Harry and Jamie were happy to do some gentle exercises to show us how much they had developed since their last visits. P2A sangHarry’s favourite song Five Little Speckled Frogs and he showed the children how much he enjoyed it with lots of smiles and kicking his legs.  Whilst P2B and P2’s in Mrs McDermot’s class received lots of smiles from baby Jamie when they sang The Wheels on the Bus.
In addition P2 discovered many techniques for soothing a crying baby such as cuddling, walking, talking, singing, gently rocking and that each baby has their own unique preferences for being soothed. Also that a persistently crying baby can cause a parent/caregiver to become frustrated, the children discussed different strategies to help them cope.

For more information please ask Mrs Harris-Toner, Miss McArthur, Mrs Chadwick and MrsMcDermot. Also check out our Roots of Empathy notice board in P2B’s classroom andwww.rootsofempathy.org.

P6 Space Trip to Dynamic Earth

Today P6 took advantage of Dalry’s golden ticket and went to Dynamic Earth to further our learning about space. We took a tour around Dynamic Earth, including exploring geology, the artic and the beginnings of the earth. We took part in a workshop and designed robots with Lego which could be sent to a moon of another planet or to explore Mars. To finish off we went to the show dome and watched a film all about moon exploration in the past and what the future of space exploration holds.

Nursery Fire Day

We went to Tollcross fire station where we learned more about the role of the fire service, how they keep us safe and what I can do to keep myself safe too.  This is especially important at this time of the year when people celebrate Halloween, Diwali and Fire Works Night with fireworks, by lighting candles and having bonfires.
We saw inside fire engines and learned more about their equipment and including the fire fighters uniform, helmet and masks and I got to practice using the fire hose.
We also saw two fire engines leave the fire station to respond to emergencies.
We gave the firefighters a BIG box of biscuits as a thank you!
Thank you to all the parents who joined us and made this trip possible.

P 1/2 Builders

P1/2 have been busy developing their building skills. The boys and girls have used materials from their amazing construction area alongside lots of other toys to build zoos, animal soft lay, aquariums and towers!
Their constructions are becoming more stable but also taller and more adventurous.
Check back to see what they build next!
