Winter Weather
Winter was most definitely upon us last week.
Can we take this opportunity to remind parents and to remind children to dress appropriately for the wet and cold conditions over the next few months.
Remember to wear coats and jumpers. Also please try to wear appropriate footwear if possible, along with scarves gloves, and hats as appropriate.
And please remember to wear them at playtime and take them home afterwards as, while we try to find all lost property, sometimes a piece can go unspotted for a few days and end up a bit chilly….
P7 Stem Trip to Edinburgh College
P7 have been focusing on STEM topics this term and have had a fantastic trip to Edinburgh College to consolidate our learning about Forces and different types of Engineering and an opportunity for them to ask lots of STEM questions to the experts!
The whole class were really engaged in all the activities and did a fabulous job of representing our school!
Diwali Fun
Our parents and families recently put together our yearly Diwali spectacular festival of dance.
Thanks to all who danced and choreographed, organised and helped.
Also thank you to Sainsburys Murrayfield for the south asian snacks they supplied.
P6 Library Buddies
Primary 6 have been joining Miss Low’s P1 class in the library and reading to them once they have chosen their books.
P6 National Museum Trip
Primary 6 went to the National Museum of Scotland for their space topic. They were the first school in Scotland to take part in the Space- Looking Out and Looking Back Workshop. They made a visual representation of the planets and how far away from the sun they were. They then handled meteorites and had to decide whether they were real or if they were rocks and learnt about how heat can return certain metals back to its original shape.
P2 Gymnastic Fantastic
In PE this term, P2 have been practising and enhancing their gymnastic skills. We have been learning a variety of holds and positions, as well as performing balances independently and with a partner, to create a short routine.
Nursery Final Group Trip to Tollcross Fire Station
The Blue, Purple and Red Groups visited Tollcross Fire Station on Monday 4th November. They were shown around the station byCommander Gavin Kotlewski and the Red Watch. The children saw inside a fire engine and tried on Fire Fighter uniforms and learned more about how to keep themselves safe and away from fire and fire works. This time of year, with Fire Works Night on the 5th of November, the fire station gets twice as many call outs as usual. Teaching the children about fire safety is very important!
P5 Recorder Lessons
P5 playing the recorders – they are playing “B B Blues” from ‘Red Hot Recorder’ series.
They are doing really well!! The class were learning to play note A today.
November Roots of Empathy News: P2 Discover How to Care for a Baby
This month P2 have been sharing their experiences of losing teeth and growing new ones through stories and artwork.
The children in P2A have enjoyed a special visit from baby Harry and his mum Kirsty and P2B and P2s in Mrs McDermot’s class have enjoyed a lovely visit from baby Jamie and his mum Maxine. Both families have visited us to tell us all about being a parent, how they are coping and how the babies are not teething yet. The children were able to give suggestions on how to soothe babies when they do start teething. Both Mum’s showed us all the things needed in their change bags to care for a baby and the children were delighted to see how much the babies have grown and changed since we last saw them last.
The theme focused on how caring and planning for baby during their first year is demanding, exciting and a challenging responsibility. In addition that caring for babies involves routines, eg. bathing, feeding and changing baby, and that some babies thrive on routines. Also the children discovered that parents learn to recognise baby’s way of showing his/her needs and how to respond to those needs. As well as spending huge amounts of time, energy and resource feeding, changing nappies, comforting, dressing, undressing and bathing baby. Also that these simple interactions play an important role in baby’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development.
Finally that the more a parent can turn these routines into to opportunities for playful and loving interactions. The more a baby can achieve a secure attachment, become competent and cope positively with life.
