P2b Roots of Empathy News
This term, P2 have been finding out how to keep a baby safe, especially as babies develop and reaching new milestones and facing new safety issues. They really enjoyed Ammar’s visit with his mum, where Zeinab shared with the children how she keeps Ammar safe. The children discovered how vulnerable babies are, how dependent they are on their family and how they must never be left alone.
In addition the children enjoyed sharing their knowledge and experience of home safety tips: always place a baby on their back when they are going to sleep, not leaving hot beverages on the edge of a table, keeping toxic chemicals out of reach and removing potential electrical hazards. Also discovering how mums-to-be keep themselves and their babies healthy during pregnancy.
Through learning how to keep a baby safe, the children appreciated that they can play a part in keeping themselves and others safe. Whether it is in the park, playing games online, crossing the road, at school or at home.

Currie Star Girls Football in Partnership with Play2Learn – Taster Session
Adult Carers 26- 35 Outreach South West Edinburgh
P3/4 and P4 Scottish Celebration
P4 and P3/4 had a great time at their Scottish Celebration. They enjoyed their Scottish taster of haggis, neeps and tatties and finishing it off with a piece of short bread. They listen to and sang Scottish songs, watched Miss Low’s talented daughter Robyn Highland dance and then shared some Scottish poems and dances that they had learnt. A fun afternoon for all!!

P2b- All things Scottish
P2b have been enjoying their new topic of exploring “where I live”. We have a tourist information centre set up in our classroom which we have all enjoyed taking turns of being tour guides and tourists. We have learnt about what the land is used for in Dalry and about different types of houses we have in the city compared to on an island. We all enjoyed our tasting afternoon and taking part in ceilidh dancing with the other P2’s.
We have also had a go at drawing thistles and weaving our own tartan!

Edinburgh Maths Circle
I’d like to advertise an upcoming University of Edinburgh event, happening towards the end of February: an in-person Maths Circle at JCMB for 5- to 16-year-olds. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass word of this event to the families of any students you think might be interested.
In-person Maths Circle – Saturday, 24 February, 1pm – 4pm – James Clerk Maxwell Building, University of Edinburgh
The (in-person) Edinburgh Maths Circle is a drop-in session where children aged 5 to 16 and their families can join in with exciting mathematical activities, games and puzzles. Students and members of staff from the School of Mathematics are on hand to help out, and light refreshments are provided. You can stay as little or as long as you like. The event is free and there is no need to book a space. Please note that for safeguarding purposes, we ask that all participants are accompanied by a responsible adult.
