Discussing Equality and Black Lives Matter with Children

Here are some resources you may want to use to discuss the issues coming out of the current Black Lives Matter protests and their coverage in the media with your children.

In school we often find children have lots of questions and sometimes worries about things appearing in the news and it helps to give them a way to express them.

Connect Survey for Scotland Wide Parent Feedback

Here is a message from Connect, an organisation that acts like a parent council for all of Scotland.

Parents/carers! We need you!
You made your voices heard in our first How are You Doing? lockdown survey and now we are launching our second lock down survey.

https://bit.ly/ConnectNextStepsSurvey

We want to understand what you’re thinking about schools/nurseries re-opening part time in August and how you are managing at the moment.

What are the challenges you face? We can then share your views and concerns with Scottish Government, local authorities and schools.

What you told us in our first survey has informed everything we’ve been doing, from making sure your voices are heard at every level and as we put together information and advice.

Please take part in this survey too so we can continue to speak up for parents.

The report of our first survey can be found here: https://connect.scot/news/parents-carers-make-their-voices-heard-connects-survey-report-and-asks

Mr Bennett’s Guide to Twitter

We have been having some worries communicated to us by families struggling to use Twitter to communicate with the teachers.

First and foremost we should underline that the Twitter accounts the Teachers are using during COVID 19 lockdown exist primarily so that the teachers can put their own messages and videos out to their classes and so there is an easy way for the children to see their faces or hear what is going on. Their main aim is to be a source of reassurance for your child.

We in no way are suggesting parents have to join Twitter to communicate and the primary conduit for all important conversations and queries should still be the school admin email inbox admin@dalry.edin.sch.uk

If you are keen to share what you are up to at home or ask a less important question, or pass on a child’s message then joining Twitter can be fun if you wish to. We do also note that Twitter is for people 13 and over so accounts should be fully supervised by you rather than a child.

With that in mind here are some videos from Mr Bennett to guide you through Twitter basics if you do wish to join in.
