Edinburgh Primaries Youth Climate Summit

Some of our newly selected climate reps in P6 and P7 attended the first Edinburgh Primaries Youth Climate Summit online this week.

They discussed all the things we are doing at Dalry to be more sustainable, including recycling, learning about the environment, litter reduction and most of all our current project to grow food at the school supported by Love Gorgie Farm.

They also expressed their hopes for things that could change in school. One was that they would love to see a green electricity source, like wind or solar power installed. Another was that there be more recycling in the playground. One of the other schools pointed out that tetrapacks (especially milk and water cartons) are not always put in the recycling by the children and that tap water as an alternative would be even better.

Lots of great ideas from the children involved that will be carried forward and discussed by the council’s education team.

Our climate reps this year are

P6 Shamaillah and Hassan

P7a Aarush and Sieanna

P7b Juan and Sara

Pupil Equalities Group On The Books

The newly formed Pupil Equalities group met for the first time. Their first task is to read and review some books that we have ordered in to improve the diversity of the books we are using in school. The children will decide which year groups the titles are most suited to, and how they should be used in school. Eilish, Archie, Saanvi, Prigya, Nate, Zenab, Mindy, Nell and Sam are all very enthusiastic about their new role in school and have lots of great ideas to develop the curriculum at Dalry.

New JRSOs Take On the Job

Our new JRSOs have started the job by performing an official survey for Sustrans on how we all get to school.

JRSOs are Junior Road Safety Officers and ours are Abhyuday and Trissha for this school year. Their task is to support road safety in school and to also encourage safe and environmentally friendly journeys to school.

Look out for the national results of the survey they contributed to in the press in coming weeks.

P2/3 Stars’ Starry Starry Night

P2/3 have enjoyed working together to create a giant reproduction of van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night” painting. The children used paper and oil pastels to create different textures and I’m sure you’ll agree, the result is impressive! We have been learning all about Van Gogh, his life and his painting style.

P2/3 Farmers at Love Gorgie Farm

Primary 2/3 had a fantastic time at Gorgie Farm learning about plants and seeing the garden. We loved learning about flowers, vegetables  and fruits and how to grow them.

We also enjoyed seeing the turkeys and chickens. Thanks to Seamus and his lovely team for also creating a fantastic game so we could learn the names of flowers and vegetables.  It was great fun!
