P2 Roots of Empathy- Latest News

Last month P2 have been discovering how babies understand long before we realise, so it is very important to communicate and respond to babies. The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit from baby Oliver and his mum, he was showing us how he communicates his feelings and wishes to his mum Sally with body gestures, facial cues and making a variety of sounds. The children sang nursery rhymes to Oliver and created a book of their drawings which was presented to Oliver, of their favourite nursery rhymes and songs. In addition P2 were learning how to read baby Oliver’s emotions and this helps us to read each other’s emotions.

The children were so excited to see how active and confident Oliver has become since his last visit. He was crawling all over the green blanket and was delighted when big sister Chloe joined us.

P2 Roots of Empathy News

This term, P2 have been finding out how to keep a baby safe, especially as babies develop and reaching new milestones and facing new safety issues. They really enjoyed Oliver’s visit with his mum, where Sally shared with the children how she keeps Oliver safe. Everyone really enjoyed their visit and big sister Chloe joined us near the end to demonstrate Oliver’s crawling. The children realised how vulnerable babies are, how dependent they are on their family and how they must never be left alone.

In addition the children enjoyed sharing their knowledge and experience of home safety tips: always place a baby on their back when they are going to sleep, not leaving hot beverages on the edge of a table, keeping toxic chemicals out of reach and removing potential electrical hazards. Also discovering how mums-to-be help to keep themselves and their babies healthy during pregnancy.

Through learning how to keep a baby safe, the children appreciated that they can play a part in keeping themselves and others safe. Whether it is in the park, crossing the road, at school or at home. the children discussed the hazards and strategies how to avoid them.

P2 Discover How to Care for a Baby in Roots of Empathy

Recently P2 have been sharing their experiences of losing teeth and growing new ones through stories and artwork.

The children have enjoyed a special visit from baby Oliver and his mum Sally. Our Roots of Empathy family visited us to tell us all about being a parent, how they are coping and how Oliver has two teeth. The children were able to give suggestions on how to soothe Oliver when he is teething. Sally showed us all the things needed in her change bag to care for baby Oliver and the children were delighted to see how much Oliver has grown and changed since we last saw him. He showed us he can sit up independently and enjoyed playing with the new toy. Also we had a lovely visit from Oliver’s big sister Chloe P7, she shared how she plays with her brother and helps look after him. The P2s enjoyed asking Chloe questions and seeing Oliver’s pure delight when he realised his big sister was in the room.

The theme focused on how caring and planning for baby during their first year is demanding, exciting and a challenging responsibility. In addition the more a parent can turn these routines into to opportunities for playful and loving interactions. The more a baby can achieve a secure attachment, become competent and cope positively with life.

Guide to Children’s Rights

The Scottish Governement has shared the below message with us.

We are delighted to announce the launch of the new Guide to Children’s Rights for Parents, Carers and family members.

This much anticipated resource provides information about children’s rights and introduces the United Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The UNCRC is the internationally mandated children’s rights treaty which sets out the rights that all children and young people should expect and what they need to grow up happy, healthy and safe. It outlines the central role played by parents and families and also recognises that they need protection and assistance to support the rights and wellbeing of their children.

The booklet was created by the UNCRC Parents Network, made up of parenting organisations and Scottish Government policy officials, who have been meeting for over a year to look at how best to inform parents, carers and family members about the rights of their children. It conveys broad universal messaging about children’s rights and has adopted a warm and reassuring tone.
